Healing Breathing For Relaxation & Energy
Posted by: | CommentsSome people ask me, how do you meditate and I say, I practice breathing…BREATHING? Really? What is there to practice? We all do it naturally and it’s not like something that needs to be done consciously. It gets taken care of without us thinking. Well, that might be true to an extent, but there are a few things you won’t know about how you breathe until you begin to pay attention…
Place your hand on your lower abdomen and breathe the way you do normally. Does your hand rise up when you breathe? If it doesn’t much, then your breath is shallow and you have a tendency to breathe in your upper chest rather than your lower belly.
This can cause a number of problems. Shallow breathers tend to be more prone to…
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Stress
- Sexual Dysfunctions
- Disease
According to yogic traditions, the breath is your prana or life force energy. If this prana doesn’t flow freely through the entire body, oxygenating the organs, cells and muscles, this may lead to dis-ease in the body and mind.
Here’s a simple technique that I learned through my White Tiger Tantra trainer. I practice daily, for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night.
There are two techniques. One is for Relaxation and the other is for Energizing the body and mind.
HEALING BREATHING FOR RELAXATION
1. Place your hand on your lower abdomen.
2. Inhale slowly and deeply to the count of 3, or until your hand begins to rise.
3. Exhale slowly as through you have a small straw in your mouth to the rhythmic count of 6.
HEALING BREATHING FOR ENERGY
1. Place your hand on your lower abdomen.
2. Inhale slowly and deeply to the count of 6, or until your hand begins to rise.
3. Exhale slowly to the rhythmic count of 3.
These powerful breathing techniques, although they are simple, will radically transform how you feel and experience the world around you. You will find that your breathing naturally attunes to this rhythm the more you practice, balancing your mental and physical health as well as creating harmony in your relationship with yourself and others.

“What is essential is invisible to the eye” –Antoine De Saint-Exupery.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in the hustle of our daily lives that we forget to really stop and pay attention to the things that really matter, like the depth and quality of your breath. Breath that’s filled with vitality and energy is what sustains us not only physically, but also on a spiritual level.
However, many people will discover that their breathing tends to be restricted to their upper chests. Babies on the other hand breathe very naturally and deeply in their lower bellies. They are uninhibited and free of emotional blockages that restrict the life force energy from flowing freely through them.
Breathing deeply and rhythmically in the belly may appear to be an easy task, but it actually takes a conscious effort, particularly if you have never practiced any form of basic meditation. By practicing rhythmic breathing we begin to release built up tensions that prevent the free of life force energy within us.
A simple rhythmic breathing exercise described in Israel Regardie’s book, The art of true healing, consists of inhaling very slowly into the belly for the count of 4, then exhaling at the same rhythm. Regardie explains that the natural processes of the universe around us have an unchanging cyclical rhythm and it is only man that has through self-righteousness, swayed away from his true nature. By tuning into this rhythm through the power of our breath, we can attune ourselves to higher vibrations, increase our own energy and vitality and heal ourselves of various illnesses.
Tantric practitioners also stress the importance of breath, to prolong sexual intercourse and to raise one’s spiritual and sexual energy. Also, learning tantric breathing exercises or meditation encourage the release of endorphins in the body like (serotonin and dopamine) that keep is in a more happy and content state.
There are many techniques that can help increase the depth of your breath. I guess you have to sort of go with whatever methods work for you, whether you practice meditation, yoga or tantra. The result will speak for itself…
